Elisabeth Vullings - Kāpiti Coast
Elisabeth was born and raised in rural South Waikato, after her parents emigrated to the area from the Netherlands with 3 children in tow. Creativity and art were major factors in their upbringing. They were bought up without television, were taught many home crafts and utilised natural and recycled materials in many different ways! Most school holidays were spent camping around the North Island, from which she developed a great appreciation of nature and the outdoors.
Elisabeth has a degree in Interior Architecture and a Masters in Fine Arts. Elements and principles of both her upbringing and studies have emerged strongly in her current art practice. Her work is often site-specific, uses recycled building materials and explores boundaries between architecture, archaeology, and art. She spends time visiting sites, developing sketches of the surrounding landscape and researching in the archives. She then collates all the information and produce both small and large paintings and ceramics in response to her findings.
Currently she works full-time from a home-based studio in Kāpiti, where she lives with husband Rory and their children, Charlie (12) and Maata (10) and dog Tofu.
